Fire has always been the trickiest element – fickle and hungry, it demands a sacrifice. Artists working with this force, either through medium or subject, must negotiate this sacrifice. Who by fire?  is an exhibition of sculpture, print and painting that explore and employ the unpredictability of fire and light, giving up certainty in exchange for new methods and perspectives.

In her large-scale painting Desert Scene (2023), a shell lies against the ground like a bas-relief, before merging back into the earth at the outer reaches of its spiral. The one situating clue, a cryptic red sun hanging low in the sky overhead, is on closer inspection not to be trusted either – most light in the painting seems to emanate from the nacred exterior of the shell itself. Both of her other paintings on display also feature a sun, but the pearlescent glow that illuminates her objects originates from slightly further forward – we are unable to see beyond the frame of the canvas, but are nevertheless distantly put in mind of some other light emanating from around where the viewer stands. These paintings propose an alternative way of observing the natural world: rather than considering it in its totality, Lea’s work invites us to look closer at the oneiric strangeness of its most basic components.
